Checks and Balances are Back

Via Crooks and Liars, after the Democratic Party take over of Congress after the 2006 elections it looks like Bush’s White House may finally be held in check:

“What you have here is a White House that has become an accountability free zone that is now facing the reality of checks and balances from Congress. For six years President Bush got pretty much whatever he wanted from a Republican-controlled rubber stamp Congress that refused to exercise any oversight of the Executive branch of government. Well, mercifully, that party appears to be over.”

Bless His Heart Indeed

"Bless your heart." I love hearing the phrase… here’s how the Urban Dictionary defines it:

1. bless your heart

1: phrase used by Southern women to excuse themselves for speaking ill of someone else.

2: an expression of sympathy or pity.

3: a polite way to respond to an ignoramus, particularly male, who showers upon you flattering but unwanted compliments.

1: "She’s as ugly as a mud-fence, bless her heart."

2: "Well, bless your heart, that must have been terrible!"

3: drunk fella: "I think you’re beautiful! Even if you were ugly, I’d STILL think you were beautiful!"

recipient: "…bless your heart."

2. bless your heart

A polite way to say "go to hell"

a: *gives the finger*
b: Bless your heart!

I specially love hearing the phrase when delivered to conservative blowhards. Here’s Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright delivering a much deserved "Bless your heart" to über-conservative Sean Hannity of Faux News:

What if Republicans Were Accused of Being the Terrorists Party of Choice?

Over the weekend Sen Obama announced his candidacy for the Presidency of the United States, and he mentioned that he’ll work to begin withdrawing US forces from Iraq by 2008. Of course, it wasn’t long before he was attacked by Bush sympathizers; however, the source of this attack was unexpected, even though the source’s ties to Bush & Co (and to conservatives in this country) are unquestionable. The source of the attacks? Australia’s conservative prime minister.

But that’s not really what this post is about. Instead, what I want to highlight is how the Australian opposition, that country’s Labor Party, has taken the conservative attack head on and gone right after the prime minister. There’s a lesson here for Democrats (video courtesy of Crooks and Liars):
